Official Now!!!
It is October 19th – which means that today is the official release date for ‘Memories’. The US DVD release was 18th but considering that they are almost a day behind – it means that the NZ as well as US DVD release dates are the same (atleast from my perspective). A big thanks to all the people who made the movie possible. The one thing I do find surprising is that people not even remotely connected to the movie want to know if we have earned anything from the movie. If I was to be brutally honest – I would tell people that it does not concern them because these are financial details which only the investors and the cast and crew and people connected to the project are privy to. But instead, being the idiot I am, I tend to put in as diplomatic as a way (hard considering that I am not really tactful) possible that we won’t be seeing any money for at least 6-12 months and there is a possibility that we might be able to recover our costs by that stage. Why do I do it? Just so that people understand that making movies is not a high glamour/instant returns & profits business {especially if it is an ultra low budget digital feature} but a long hard struggle to try and achieve something. If people are interested in knowing what the movie business is all about I would recommend reading Dov S-S Siemens’ lucid book ‘From Reel to Deal’. It is an easy read for anyone interested in movies and once you read it, you begin realizing the amount of work and energy that goes into making any movie happen. The distribution models are rigid and traditional – there is a wave of changing coming through but it will take a few more years to manifest itself on a wide scale. And till that time comes – low budget movies will have to endure the hard struggle of trying to get themselves noticed.
'Life Acquatic' is a wonderful movie..really quirky and loads of fun. The dry humor rubs off on you and it definitely matches Wes Anderson's earlier movies in terms of energy and freshness.
It has been a long long day at school trouble shooting stuff through the day and the day simply disappeared. I feel a little bit dazed but nothing that a good night's sleep can't fix.
Ciao,

Amit,
I think that people want to know everything about the movie business and people like money. I wonder if those people are weighing whether or not they want to make a movie. I know that the fact that if I direct the script I'm writing now, chances are I won't see a profit for a long time and more than likely I will never. Don't tell my wife that. In fact if she asks you how much money you made, tell her you're too busy to talk because you are snorting coke off a 5 grand a night prostitute in your private jet. Actually don't tell her that either.
