The Post Bar - Night 1
The flight day has finally arrived and I did some quick errands before catching the shuttle service to the airport. The one thing on my mind was that Lance would have to find new flatmates as soon as he got back to NZ since the french/thai couple are moving out beginning of Jan but I pushed the whole thing to the back of my mind as it was the start of my holiday. The flight to Bangkok was nice and uneventful. I was surprised to see how sternfaced the airport official are - in Auckland as well as Bangkok. I guess it is a high pressure job dealing with a gazillion passengers day in and day out but I still wish that they smiled a little. The plane itself was half empty because of the recent political turmoil in Thailandand considering the fact that it is peak tourist season - Thai Airways as well as the Thai economy would be really hurting. The food in the flight was very yummy for a change.
Coming into Bangkok I did not know what to expect and the first thing that hit me was the humidity and the heat and all the different kinds of smells that invade your senses. In a lot of ways it reminded me of India minus the super high body count. I had already booked an airport tranfer and my first night at the hotel through Intrepid Travels, so it was a painless process just settling into Bangkok.
In the hotel lobby I bumped into Lance {not accidentally as he obviously knew where I was staying and he booked into the same hotel}; he had just arrived from Malaysia where he was doing a camera job. Once I settled into my room, we decided to go out for a drink and also to grab something to eat. It was close to 11.30PM, so we didn't go exploring too far and had a couple of things to eat from the roadside stalls. There were a few pubs down the road but we settled on a pub that was not too crowded and had a chilled out vibe.
Thai people are really friendly and open and we chatted with a lot of people including the bar owner, who offered us a couple of free shots of local home brewed spirits - it was some really strong stuff and instantly warmed you up. Across the table where Lance and me were seated was this girl with the most amazing smile and she was happily chatting away to a couple of other foreigners in the bar. After half an hour or so she came over to our table and introduced herself and then we got chatting.
It turned out that she is the bar owner's sister and she hung out at the bar as a social thing and also to improve her english as she is studying international communication. While we were chatting Lance ordered a mushroom hellfire salad and it was yummy. Tuan chatted with us for the rest of the night we were there. Lance decided to call it a night around 3.30AM and seeing that I was really interested in Tuan he said I could stay on if I liked. I decided not to since I was feeling very tired from the flight as well as the drinks. This brought out a big smile from Tuan {which Lance pointed out later} as she obviously gets hit on a lot and asked out by a lot of foreigners since she iis beautiful, so I think it took her by surprise that I didn't try to do the same thing as rest of the people.
So we left things there saying that we might pop back to the bar tomorrow night. Once I got to the hotel room I felt very sick and I have been throwing up ever since and all the mushrooms that I ate earlier in the night seem to have come out but I am still feeling super dizzy and still trying to vomit something out even though there is nothing left in my stomach. I'll try and sleep for now.
Later,
Amit
